The earliest artificial Christmas trees were developed by Germans in the 19th century and they were made using goose feathers that were dyed green. Most modern artificial Christmas trees are made from polyvinyl chloride, aluminum and fiber optic material. The feather trees became very popular in the early part of the 20th century and eventually made their way to the United States and were also popular. Feather trees ranged widely in size from a 2 inch tree to a 98inch tree sold in departmental stores during the 1920.

Trends in artificial Christmas trees have constantly evolved over the years and other types of artificial Christmas trees have appeared on the market. Users of artificial trees assert that they are more convenient, cheaper and reusable than natural Christmas trees. A 2004 Polls revealed that 58% of U.S.residents used an artificial tree instead of a natural tree. Some apartment buildings have banned natural trees because of fire concerns.
